I just have uploaded Microsoft 365 family to another desktop (that previously had an old version of office) with a new email address and now I cannot get into excel and word even though they are updated. Login via settings to Microsoft gives error message

"Oops something went wrong" saying probably Microsoft fault and to try again but I keep getting the same error"

If I try to login via excel or word I get the error message:

"Something went wrong

Please try again later

Send feedback"

Please help

Thank you

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

First, make sure Windows 10 is updated. Next, check the specific Microsoft Account with Family Subscription here: https://account.microsoft.com/services to see if it is already active.

After making sure of this, please continue with the steps below.

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how:

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your subscription.
    • Find your Microsoft (license or subscription type) and click the "Install" button.
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" button still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

Thank you for letting me know.

Going back to error. The error code 0x800706d9 often points to a Windows component not running properly, usually the Windows Firewall or Windows Security services. Even if you aren’t actively using them, Microsoft 365 apps rely on those services in the background.

If you already did making sure Windows is updated, please follow the steps below:

Make sure there's no third-party antivirus software active that might be interfering with the update process:

    • Open the Windows Security app.
    • Click the "Settings" (gear icon) in the lower left.
    • Under Security Providers, click "Manage Providers".
    • Verify if Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active antivirus and Windows Firewall is the firewall.
    • If not, please uninstall the third-party antivirus, restart your PC, and check again at Settings > Windows Update.

If issue still persists, could you provide me with a screenshot of your current Windows OS Build?

    • To do this, press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type winver and press Enter, capture a screenshot (make sure not to include your email address), and attach the screenshot in your next response.

Let me know how it goes.
