I am unable to add an account alias using an email address

I tried to add another alias using an email address. It would not let me add it, telling me that the email address is already in use. However, that email address is not currently an alias for Microsoft products.

    Hi Darren,

Microsoft requires every email alias to be unique across its entire account system. Even if the email isn’t showing as an alias on your account, it might still be:

Linked to another Microsoft account as a primary sign-in or alias (Xbox, Skype, Outlook.com, OneDrive, etc.).

Recently removed from another account and still in the 60-day retention period before it becomes available again.

Part of a work or school domain managed by an organization, which can block adding it to a personal account.

Previously used for Microsoft services and still reserved in the system.

    What can you do is:

Check if the email already has a Microsoft account

Go to Microsoft Account Recovery and enter the email. If it’s recognized, it means it’s tied to an account.

If you own that email address

Try signing in at account.microsoft.com. If successful, remove the alias from that account first, then add it to your preferred account.

If the email was part of a closed account

Wait for the 60-day period to end before trying again.

If it’s a work or school email

Check with your IT admin if the domain allows personal aliases. If not, you’ll need to use a different email.

    Need an alias now?

You can create a new @outlook.com alias as a quick workaround.

I know this can feel inconvenient, but it’s a security measure to prevent duplicate identities and protect accounts__.__ If you’d like, I can guide you through the quickest way to check if that email is already tied to a Microsoft account or help you set up an alternative alias. Let me know how it goes, Happy to help!

If you are receiving a message that the email address you are trying to add as an alias is already in use, it could mean that the email address is associated with another Microsoft account or service. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check for Existing Accounts: Verify if the email address is linked to another Microsoft account. You can try signing in with that email address to see if it is associated with an account.
    2. Use a Different Email Address: If the email address is indeed in use, consider using a different email address for the alias.
    3. Contact Support: If you believe the email address should not be in use, you may need to contact Microsoft support for assistance in resolving the issue.
    4. Wait for Sync: If you have recently made changes to your account or added a new domain, it might take some time for the changes to propagate. Waiting a while and trying again could help.

If you continue to face issues, please refer to the troubleshooting section in the Microsoft documentation for more detailed guidance.
