Has anyone a real idea how to fix Code31 in device manager?

I captured and downloaded the Realtek 5.0 Bluetooth Adapter file from Realtek and asked Windows11 to update the driver using this file. Windows claims this is the latest. The file is from July 11, 2024. That makes no sense since Code31 seems to be a Network driver related issue. Or at least one of the possibilities. If I have the file, why do I need to update Network Adapter?

The actual start to all of this is the lousy MS October update that crashes my Logitech K360 keyboard. I cannot update my Logi+ software because it cannot see the keyboard although W11 does. Getting more confusing?!

So what is up with this Realtek adapter? It has always had the yellow triangle, and it does not get any updates resolved through Windows Update, so I tried the old get the driver route, but as mentioned up front in this note, that doesn't work.

I would rather not touch the Network Adapter until MS can shed some real light on all of these items.

  • The Bluetooth adapter issue
  • The OCT security update and the follow up which does not fix anything

I have an open item on the OCT thing, and no one is responding past MS and Logi are looking at it. Kind of ridiculous to not be seen anywhere unless I am the only poor sod who needs a new brand board.

Thanks for any help

Alan

    Hi Alan,

A Realtek Bluetooth Code 31 on Windows 11 almost always means the Bluetooth half of a Realtek combo card cannot load because it is mismatched with the Wi-Fi half. On these Realtek M.2 cards the Bluetooth radio rides on the same module as the Wi-Fi adapter. The firmware and driver set are shipped together by the PC or motherboard maker. That is why Device Manager says the July 11, 2024 Bluetooth INF is the latest, yet the device still fails. Updating only the standalone Bluetooth INF from Realtek rarely fixes Code 31. You actually need the exact Wireless LAN + Bluetooth package for your model. I know you prefer not to touch the Network Adapter, but in this case the Bluetooth driver depends on it. You are not changing any network settings, just reinstalling the paired package so Windows can load the Bluetooth stack.

Temporarily disconnect the PC from the internet. This prevents Windows from injecting a generic driver while you clean things up.

Open Device Manager. Expand Bluetooth. Right click your Realtek Bluetooth device and choose Uninstall device. Tick Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then OK. Now expand Network adapters. Right click the Realtek Wi-Fi adapter on the same card and do the same. Restart the PC.

Install the official Wireless LAN or WLAN + Bluetooth driver package from your PC or motherboard support page for Windows 11. Vendors usually label it Realtek Wireless LAN Driver or similar, and inside it are both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers that are version matched and HVCI compliant. If your machine is a custom build, use the motherboard vendors support page for your exact board model. Avoid the generic Realtek site for this one.

Reconnect the internet. Open Device Manager and confirm the Realtek Bluetooth device loads with no yellow icon. Bluetooth should now be working and Code 31 should be gone.

A quick note about the Logitech K360: That keyboard uses a 2.4 GHz Unifying USB receiver, not the Realtek Bluetooth radio, so its crash after the October update is a separate issue. Once Bluetooth is healthy, if the keyboard still will not show up in Logi Options+, we can tackle that next.

If you want, tell me the exact PC or motherboard model and I will point you to the right OEM package to install so you do not have to guess.

To address the Code 31 error in Device Manager, which indicates that the device is not working properly, there are several steps you can take:

    1. Check for Driver Updates: Since you mentioned that Windows claims you have the latest driver for the Realtek Bluetooth Adapter, ensure that you are indeed using the correct driver. Sometimes, manufacturers provide drivers that are not the latest version available through Windows Update. You can try downloading the driver directly from the Realtek website or the device manufacturer's site.
    2. Uninstall and Reinstall the Device: In Device Manager, right-click on the Realtek Bluetooth Adapter and select "Uninstall device." After uninstalling, restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver upon reboot. This can sometimes resolve issues related to corrupted drivers.
    3. Check for Conflicts: Since you mentioned issues with your Logitech keyboard, ensure that there are no conflicts between devices. Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals and see if that resolves the issue.
    4. Run Windows Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. This can help identify and fix issues automatically.
    5. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure your Windows 11 is fully updated. Sometimes, subsequent updates can resolve issues introduced by previous ones.
    6. Check Device Compatibility: Make sure that your Realtek Bluetooth Adapter is compatible with Windows 11 and that there are no known issues with the specific version you are using.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to consider reaching out to Microsoft Support or the device manufacturer for further assistance, especially regarding the October update that you mentioned.
