Greeting.

I'm using Office Home & Student 2021 on my macbook m2 and after the latest office update document function in word app is unable to click and vertical alignment is not available too. Please I need a quick solution to solve these issues. I hope not to be forced to use another app to write my books after spending time and money on using microsoft office.

Which specific release of Office 2021 do you have? In Word, click Word > About Word.

Also, which version of macOS do you have?

I am on a subscription version here (Microsoft 365, version 16.103.1) and I can access Format > Document with no errors: Skärmavbild 2025-11-22 kl. 20.22.24

And the Vertical Alignment option is on the Layout tab of the Document dialog box:

    Skärmavbild 2025-11-22 kl. 20.24.53

    Hi Fahd,

Thank you for sharing your question. I get how annoying it is when stuff like the Document option and Vertical Alignment go haywire after you update, especially since you use Word to write books. Let’s sort this together.

Based on my knowledge, this kind of thing pops up after updates mess with Word for Mac. The Format > Document thing, where you set vertical alignment, might freeze up or vanish because of UI bugs or updates that didn't finish right. Microsoft knows about these kinds of issues in recent versions and suggests looking for updates or fixing the install.

    Please follow these steps.

Fix or Reinstall Office: If updating doesn't do the trick, uninstall Office and reinstall it from Microsoft's site. This gets rid of any broken bits.

Find Vertical Alignment: Once Word is working, you can find vertical alignment under Format > Document > Layout tab. If the window still won't open, try clearing the app's settings or resetting Word.

Check macOS: Make sure your Mac is running the newest macOS version that Office 2021 supports, since older versions can mess with features

May I also ask, does this happen only in Word, or in other Office programs too? Also, do you see any messages about activating or licensing when you open Word? This will help figure out if it's an activation problem or just a UI bug.

I hope this answer is helpful, if you have any questions, feel free to reply.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with the Word app on your MacBook M2 after the latest update. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problems with the document function and vertical alignment:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that both your macOS and Microsoft Office applications are fully updated. Sometimes, issues can arise from incomplete updates.
    2. Restart the Application: Close Word completely and then reopen it. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches.
    3. Reset Word Preferences: You can reset Word preferences by deleting the preferences file. To do this, navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and look for files that start with com.microsoft.Word. Move these files to the trash and restart Word.
    4. Check for Add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins can interfere with Word functionality. Disable any add-ins you have installed to see if that resolves the issue.
    5. Repair Office: If the problem persists, you might consider repairing your Office installation. You can do this by going to the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool and selecting the repair option.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.
