Why doesn't the sort option in Access work? It's grayed out.

I want to sort items in a field alphabetically but the sorting option is grayed out and won't work.

try switching to Datasheet View. Open the table or query, then go to Home > View > Datasheet View and check if the Sort Ascending or Sort Descending buttons are active.
