The sort option in Access may be grayed out for several reasons. Here are a few common issues to consider:

    1. Form Type: If you are working with a form that is not bound to a table or query, the sort option may not be available. Ensure that your form is bound to a data source.
    2. Recordset Type: If the form is based on a recordset that does not support sorting, such as a snapshot-type recordset, the sorting option will be disabled.
    3. Filter Applied: If there is an active filter on the form, it might restrict the ability to sort. Try removing any filters to see if that enables the sort option.
    4. Design View: If you are in design view rather than form view, the sort option will not be available. Make sure you are in the correct view to sort the data.
    5. Field Type: Some field types, such as Memo or OLE Object, cannot be sorted. Ensure that the field you are trying to sort is of a sortable type, like text or number.

If none of these issues apply, you may want to check for any additional settings or properties that could be affecting the sort functionality.

Hello Tom Kauffmann, thanks for posting this in our community.

The sort option in Access can appear grayed out for several reasons. Common causes include being in Design View, working with a query or table that is read-only, or encountering layout view restrictions.

try switching to Datasheet View. Open the table or query, then go to Home > View > Datasheet View and check if the Sort Ascending or Sort Descending buttons are active.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli
