whenever I use Word or Excel, after 5-10 minutes I get a pop up that says "We're Sorry, but Excel has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Excel will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?"

no matter what I click next, the application shuts down

thanks

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    • May I know what troubleshooting steps have you already taken? This will help me avoid recommending them again.
    • Are you currently running Windows 11?

In the meantime, if you haven’t already:

    If repairing doesn’t solve it:

    • Could you let me know your exact Windows version? You can quickly check by pressing Windows key + R, typing winver, and pressing Enter.
    • Also, please let me know what type of Office subscription you’re using (Microsoft 365, Office 2021, etc.), that will help us figure out the right next steps.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The error message you are encountering in Excel indicates that there may be an issue with the application or its settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

    1. Repair Office: You can try repairing your Office installation. To do this:
      • Open Control Panel.
      • Click on Programs > Uninstall a program.
      • Select Microsoft 365 and then click Change.
      • Choose Online Repair and follow the prompts.
    2. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Office applications are up to date. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs and improve stability.
    3. Start in Safe Mode: You can start Excel in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key while starting Excel, or run excel /s from the Run dialog (Windows + R).
    4. Remove Add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins can cause issues. Disable any add-ins you have installed and check if the problem continues.
    5. Reset Preferences: If the preferences for Excel are corrupted, resetting them might help. You can do this by deleting the Excel preferences file.
    6. Check Background Programs: Ensure that no other applications are interfering with Excel. Close any unnecessary programs running in the background.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, you may want to consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Office completely.
