Exporting slides as JPG files from Powerpoint

I was running Office 2016 on a Mac.
When I was using Mac OS 10.13.6 I was able to export the presentation as a series of JPG files.
I recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.14.6 and now, when I try to export the presentation as a series of images (be it JPG, BMP, TIFF) I get the error message "Power Point was unable to export all slides". In fact, it does not export any at all. Export - PDF works fine.

I tried upgrading to Office 2019, and the problem remains.

Suggestions for cause and cure gratefully received.

Based on a related answer elsewhere:

the problem might have been that the path:filename was too long. Certainly, after I had I shortened the names of several directories further up the tree, export was successful.
