so i did a windows update earlier today and ever since i did the windows update, i can't open settings as apparently there's no app of it. my windows key on screen doesn't work so i cant even click any previous apps that i used nor' use apps that i haven't got on my desktop. i cant even do win + i and that doesn't even work. i can't change wifis nor turn sounds down on my desktop. i tried sfc /scannow restore health and all that and still nothing but i tried to view my display setting by right clicking on my desktop and the error that comes up is "this file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. PLease install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings Page" and yet i cant even open settings after this update. i cant do anything for my job unless this gets fixed. any help is required much appriciated .

    Hi,

You can first try the suggestions above, but instead of doing a clean install of Windows as a last resort, I recommend performing a repair in-place upgrade, which will keep your files and apps safe.

Also, to clarify how to access WinRE:

    1. Press Windows key + L to go to the sign-in screen.
    2. Press and hold the Shift key.
    3. While holding Shift, click the Power icon on the screen and select Restart.
    4. Keep holding Shift until you are taken to the Recovery Menu.

From there, try the following options:

    Startup Repair

    Uninstall latest quality update

    System Restore

If the issue persists, follow the steps below to perform a repair in-place upgrade:

Note: Before doing so, unplug all unnecessary external peripherals connected to your PC, and temporarily disable any third-party antivirus program to avoid interference.

    1. Click the 'Download now' button under 'Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)' and save it to your computer: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 (Click the third 'Download Now' button.)
    2. Run the downloaded file and select 'Yes' when prompted by User Account Control (UAC).
    3. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms if you agree.
    4. On the 'What do you want to do?' screen, select 'Upgrade this PC now' and click 'Next.'

(This stage will download, verify, and create the Windows 11 installation media.) It will take some time to complete.

    1. Under 'Choose what to keep,' select 'Keep personal files and apps,' then click 'Next.'
    2. Click 'Install,' and the installation will begin. (This process will take some time, so please be patient.)

It sounds like you're experiencing significant issues with your Windows settings after a recent update. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

    1. Access Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): Since you can't access Settings, you can try to boot into WinRE. Restart your computer and repeatedly press the F11 key (or the appropriate key for your device) until you see the recovery options. From there, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and then restart your PC. After it restarts, you can choose to boot into Safe Mode.
    2. Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, you might be able to access Settings and troubleshoot further. You can also try uninstalling the latest update if it’s causing issues.
    3. System Restore: If you have a restore point created before the update, you can restore your system to that point. This can also be done from WinRE under Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
    4. Repair Windows: If the above steps do not work, consider using the sfc /scannow command again in Safe Mode or using the DISM tool to repair the Windows image. You can run the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in the Command Prompt.
    5. Reinstall Windows: As a last resort, if nothing else works, you may need to consider reinstalling Windows. Make sure to back up your important files before proceeding with this option.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
