Thanks for sharing the details, Smk! Check if Scroll Lock (ScrLk) is ON
If Scroll Lock is enabled, arrow keys won’t move the cursor.
Try one of these:
- Press Scroll Lock key (may be
ScrLk,ScLk, or under a secondary FN layer) - If your laptop requires FN: Fn + ScrLk
- If you don’t see it:
- Open On-Screen Keyboard
- Press Windows key, type osk, press Enter
- If ScrLk is lit in blue → click it to turn off
- Open On-Screen Keyboard
When random characters appear (ex: typing “k” becomes “2k#”), it is almost always one of these:
Turn off stuck language or layout
- Windows may have switched your keyboard layout accidentally.
- Press: Windows + Space Repeatedly press until it returns to your correct language (ex: English US).
Then check typing again.
Turn off “Filter Keys” (very common issue)
If Filter Keys is enabled, keys may repeat incorrectly or not work.
Press Windows + I
Go to Accessibility
Click Keyboard
Turn OFF:
- Filter Keys
- Sticky Keys
- Toggle Keys
Test typing again.
See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.
Best regards,
Kimberly
