Hello Priyal Chatterjee,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!
I understand that this is a frustrating issue with Windows Hello. The error "This option is currently unavailable" indicates that Windows can't detect your fingerprint sensor, or there's a miscommunication in profile data. Here's something you should check:
1 - Windows settings
- Make sure everything is up to date:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install anything pending.
- In the same place, click Advanced options > check for Optional updates and install.
- Still in Settings, open Accounts section
- Check in both Email & accounts and Access work or school
- If you found there's any organization accounts, Remove them
2 - Check and re-enable biometric device
- Right-click Start logo > Device Manager > expand Biometric devices
- Right-click your fingerprint sensor > select Disable device
- Wait for 10s, then right-click again and choose Enable device
- If the issue persists, try refresh the scanner driver (if possible):
- Right-click > choose Update driver > check Search automatically...
- If it doesn't work, choose Uninstall instead and restart your PC
3 - Set up Windows Hello sign-in again
- Go to Settings > Accounts > turn OFF For improved security, allow Windows Hello sign-in…
- Open Sign-in options > remove all Windows Hello (PIN, Fingerprint, and Facial, if used)
- Restart your PC > go back and re-add your sign-in options, including fingerprint.
4 - Reset biometric data
- In File Explorer, go to:
C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC - Delete all the contents of the
NGCfolder > Restart PC and try setting up Windows Hello again.
5 - Using built-in repair reinstallation
- Open Windows Settings > System > Recovery
- Click Reinstall now to Fix problems using Windows Update
Disclaimer: This reinstallation can fix update issues without removing your files or applications. However, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up.
If the issue persists after these steps, it could be a driver or hardware problem. In that case, reinstalling the fingerprint driver from the manufacturer’s website or checking for firmware updates may help.
