I'm using Microsoft Word - but recently installed Libre Office onto the same machine (Windows 11 Pro).
In Microsoft Word I attempted to add an Open TextDocument Object from the Insert tab. Microsoft Word appeared to be hanging and then some weird screen came up (I think it was Task Manger). Eventually, after a long while I got the following message from Microsoft Word:
The program used to create this object is LibreOffice. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding.
Getting back to Libre Office. Upon install, Libre Office asked if I wanted to associate ods files. I carefully checked my system to see if the ods extension existed as files - they didn't - and neither did the odt extension. So, I felt safe allowing Libre Office to associate ods.
I'm not sure if associating the ods extension was the root cause of the Microsoft object failing. I just thought I'd include that information.
Any advice to restore this? I was expecting a separate Microsoft to appear when invoking the TextDocument Object. How do I restore original operation of the TextDocument Object? (i.e. a Microsoft Word document opens when creating the object).
Try uninstalling LibreOffice, then see if you can insert an OpenDocument Text object as expected.
This worked - but now Libre Office isn't installed. How do I get to two to coexist without interfering with one another?
Can you give us a description of your use case? What job are you trying to get done? What situation requires LibreOffice and Word to co-operate with OLE objects? This usually leads to a good answer more quickly.
I need Libre Draw to get rid of Visio. That's it. At the moment I'm testing Libre Draw to see if that'll be suitable enough for my needs. If so, then I'll discontinue my subscription for Visio.

How would Libre Draw lead to inserting OpenDocument Text objects in Word? I have no idea. I was attempting to use OpenDocument text object to insert computer code without the hassle of spell check placing red underlines everywhere. Installing Libre Draw had nothing to do with that. Although - it happens to be a requirement that Libre Draw has the ability to cut and paste block diagrams in to Word.
I gotten a vague understanding that you can assign a text editor, including Word, to be the software program that handles the OpenDocument Text object. So, it stands to reason that I should be able to install Libre Draw and configure Microsoft Word to understand that Microsoft Word itself should be the text editor for an OpenDocument Text object.
I think the likely issue is the Microsoft and LibreOffice have mismatched ideas on the definition of a OpenFormat Text object. From your description,it sounds like there are conflicts between the object definitions from the two different vendors, so they are not able to communicate.
What export options does Libre Draw have? Can you output an EMF or SVG? Then use one of those vector formats to place in Word and avoid the whole OLE object mess. That technology is 35 years old and showing it's age.
