Does "numerical" log-in mean that you are using a PIN? See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-or-reset-your-pin-in-windows-a386c519-3ab2-b873-1e9b-bb228a98b904 .
Numerical log-in
I wasn't able to log-in to my laptop. I hadn't changed the password. Tried the usual steps (reset through LIVE website, shut down the computer, etc). How strange. Now I can't access anything. Any suggestions?

Microsoft Q&A is public, and we can only provide information. It is beyond our capability to assist directly with the account or login-related issues.
To help narrow down the issue:
- Could you let me know if you’re seeing any specific error messages when you try to sign in?
- Also, could you provide the steps you have already taken? This will help me avoid recommending them again.
Click "Add comment" to let me know.

Q&A Assist2025-12-14T15:27:22.8866667+00:00 AI generated content. This question contains an answer created with AI from Q&A Assist. Learn moreIf you're unable to log in to your laptop and haven't changed your password, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
- Check for Caps Lock and Num Lock: Ensure that Caps Lock or Num Lock is not affecting your password entry.
- Use the Correct User Account: Make sure you are trying to log in with the correct user account.
- Reset Your Password: If you have access to the recovery options, you can try resetting your password through the Microsoft account recovery page. If you are using a local account, you may need to use a password reset disk if you created one.
- Contact Support: If you are still unable to access your account, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance. They can help you with account recovery options.
- System Restore: If you suspect that a recent change may have caused the issue, you can use System Restore to revert your computer to a previous state where you could log in successfully. This requires having a restore point set up prior to the issue.
If none of these steps work, it may be best to seek professional technical support.

Stefan Blom 324.2K Reputation points MVP Volunteer Moderator2025-12-15T11:57:21.99+00:00 I have a dinosaur for a computer. It's running windows 8. Yes, always logged in with a pin, NOT a password. I used to get an option for this, now I don't. Actually got LIVE help today. It was suggested to restart 3-4 times until I get a recovery/safe mode screen. It didn't. The LIVE help suggested reaching out to the manufacturer then the chat was dropped. :( However, I tried one more time (4th attempt) and got the recovery/safe mode screen. Now, I'm too nervous to do anything.
Thanks for the follow-up. It seems that you are on the right track.
I'm afraid I haven't used Windows 8 in years, so I can't offer any specific advice for that version. :-(
