I spent the last hour writing up a policy proposal for my paper that was a paragraph long and it is now missing.

    Hi Cheswick, Lillian,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I’m sorry to hear that the policy proposal you worked on has gone missing, it must be frustrating after spending so much time on it.

To better understand what happened, could you share if anything unusual occurred on your device before the document disappeared? For example, did the application crash, did you restart your computer, or were there any updates running? Also, please let me know the steps you took just before noticing the file was missing.

With that information, I’ll be able to guide you more effectively on how to recover the document or prevent this from happening again.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

If your paragraph is missing from your Word document, you can try the following methods to recover it:

    1. Check AutoRecover Files: Open Word and go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents. This will show any unsaved documents that Word has automatically saved.
    2. Search for Temporary Files: You can search for temporary files that might contain your lost content. To do this, select Start, type *.tmp in the search box, and press Enter. Look for files that match the date and time when you last edited your document.
    3. Check the Recycle Bin: If you accidentally deleted the document, check the Recycle Bin on your desktop to see if it is there. You can restore it if you find it.
    4. Look for Backup Files: If you have enabled the backup copy option in Word, you might find a backup file with a .wbk extension. Search for these files by typing *.wbk in the search box.
    5. Restart Word: Sometimes, simply closing and reopening Word can trigger the Document Recovery pane to show any recovered files.

By following these steps, you might be able to recover your missing paragraph or document.
