Hello, I am trying to add my email domain to my outlook account. According to your Q&A, this should be doable on a personal account (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/setup/domains-faq?view=o365-worldwide). However, the link in that section does not give me any instructions on how to do this. So now I'm frustrated trying to see if this is actually possible or if your Q&A is wrong and needs to be updated.

Can I add my custom email domain to my outlook account under a personal or family subscription?

If not, is there a way to update my subscription to a business account without having to pay for a whole new subscription?

  • I am open to paying the difference between to the two subscriptions but it would be crazy if I had to pay the $265 business cost + $99 personal account (2 subscriptions for no reason!) when I only need one. It also seems silly to put this feature behind another big paywall when I am already paying for a domain on GoDaddy + your Microsoft 365 service and don't need any other business feature besides the email domain, which again, I am already paying to use.

Thank you for your advice and help.

You cannot add a custom email domain to Outlook under a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. That feature is only available with Microsoft 365 Business subscriptions. Unfortunately, there is no “upgrade path” where you pay the difference — you would need to purchase a Business plan separately.

    Hello

Microsoft's personal and business products are two separate ecosystems.

Microsoft 365 personal or family plan are on the general consumer/personal product side. They all link to the personal Microsoft account, either you use outlook.com/hotmail.com alias, or free third party emails like gmail, yahoo, etc. It will NOT accept custom domain, even if you use it for personal business.

Microsoft 365 business basic/standard/premium for example, will accept custom domain email address, but these are products from the commercial/business side. They will not work with outlook.com/hotmail.com or free third party emails. When you sign up for those plans, you can either add your custom domain, or use Microsoft provided domain onmicrosoft.com.

Since these are separate products, there's no way you can just upgrade from personal products to commercial products by paying the difference.

The instruction you referenced is strictly for commercial products only.

What are the steps to set it up: "If your domain is registered with GoDaddy, you can follow the steps to set it up with your Outlook account."? Are the steps on GoDaddy or are they on Microsoft?

As a benefit of your Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, you can create a personalized email address associated with your Outlook.com mailbox, such as yourname@example.com. However, currently, the only supported way to connect a custom domain is through domains managed by GoDaddy. If your domain is registered with GoDaddy, you can follow the steps to set it up with your Outlook account.

If your domain is with a different registrar, you may need to consider transferring it to GoDaddy or using a different approach, as Microsoft 365 does not support connecting domains from other registrars for personal accounts.

Regarding upgrading to a business account, you would typically need to purchase a new subscription. However, you may want to contact Microsoft support to inquire about the possibility of upgrading your existing subscription without incurring the full cost of a new business account. They might offer options or discounts for existing users.

It's understandable to feel frustrated with the limitations, especially when you are already paying for a domain and a Microsoft 365 service. You can reach out to Microsoft support for more tailored assistance regarding your specific situation.
