Microsoft 365 Installed, but Excel and Powerpoint close unexpectedly with a Problem Report

At the end of my subscription to Microsoft 365 personal account this week, I renewed and expanded from a personal to a family account. The Microsoft Website requested that I install the products (Office, Teams, Co-pilot), even though I have Office on my Mac and have used Word, Excel, and Powerpoint extensively for the past six years. The install was successful, but when I opened Excel and Powerpoint both products "quit unexpectedly" and a "Problem Report" was displayed. Word opened seamlessly.

It seems that you are experiencing issues with Excel and PowerPoint quitting unexpectedly after renewing your Microsoft 365 subscription. This can happen for several reasons, including corrupted application files or preferences, or conflicts with background programs.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that both your macOS and Microsoft Office applications are up to date. Sometimes, updates can resolve unexpected behavior.
    2. Safe Mode: Try starting Excel and PowerPoint in Safe Mode. This can help determine if background processes are causing the issue. To enter Safe Mode, restart your Mac and hold down the Shift key until you see the login window.
    3. Create a New User Account: Log in as a new user or create a new user account on your Mac. This can help identify if the issue is related to your user profile.
    4. Repair Office: If the applications were moved or duplicated, they might need to be repaired. You can uninstall and then reinstall Microsoft Office to ensure that everything is set up correctly.
    5. Check Preferences: Corrupted preferences can also lead to issues. You might want to reset the preferences for Excel and PowerPoint.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.

Thanks for sharing the details! Try to reset Microsoft 365 Licensing

When you upgraded, macOS kept old Personal-license tokens, and Excel/PowerPoint are stricter about license validation than Word.

    Steps

    Quit all Microsoft apps

    Open Finder

    Press Cmd + Shift + G

    Paste this and press Enter:

    • ~/Library/Group Containers/

Delete (or move to Desktop) these folders:

    • UBF8T346G9.Office

    UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost

    Now go to:

    • ~/Library/Containers/

    Delete:

    • com.microsoft.Excel

    com.microsoft.Powerpoint

    Restart your Mac

    Open Word first, sign in

    Then open Excel, then PowerPoint

This forces Office to rebuild licensing from your Family subscription.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
