Every time I try to shut down my Windows 11 computer, I get a message saying Task Host is stopping background tasks—do you know why that keeps happening and how to fix it?” Just purchased this home pc less than a month ago.

That error is usually caused by some app the starts with Windows and is running in the background, and Windows cannot close the app on shutdown.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

    Select the Startup tab.

On that tab, disable any startup app that you do not need to be starting with Windows, except any 3rd party anti-virus, then restart (not shut down) your PC, and then check if that resolves the problem.

The message Task Host is stopping background tasks typically appears when Windows is trying to close applications or processes that are still running in the background. This can happen for a few reasons:

    1. Background Applications: Some applications may not close properly when you initiate a shutdown, causing Windows to wait for them to finish before it can complete the shutdown process.
    2. Updates or Tasks: If there are updates or scheduled tasks that need to be completed, Windows will also display this message while it waits for those tasks to finish.
    3. System Configuration: Certain system settings or configurations may lead to applications not closing as expected.

    How to Fix It:

    • Close Applications Manually: Before shutting down, ensure that all applications are closed manually to prevent them from running in the background.
    • Check for Updates: Make sure your Windows and all applications are up to date, as updates can fix bugs that may cause this issue.
    • Disable Fast Startup: Sometimes, disabling Fast Startup can help resolve shutdown issues. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable, and then uncheck the Fast Startup option.
    • Check Task Scheduler: Look for any scheduled tasks that may be running and causing delays during shutdown.

If the problem persists, you may want to consider checking for any specific applications that are causing the issue or looking into further system diagnostics.
