    Hi George Ferguson,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

I know it's been a while, but since the Q&A Assist has given some "confusing" information, I'd like to clear something up. In short, there's no way to recover an authenticator you have lost access to. Even if you can sign in, you won't get back the local codes (if weren't backed up before). Authenticator codes cannot be reconstructed, even by Microsoft.

I know this is not the news anyone wants to hear, but I think it's better to be direct, so you don’t have to keep trying things that aren’t possible.

If you have not had access to your Microsoft Authenticator for almost a decade, recovering access may be challenging. Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Check Backup Options: If you had previously set up cloud backup for your Authenticator app, you might be able to restore your accounts by reinstalling the app and signing in with your Microsoft account.
    2. Account Recovery: For accounts linked to the Authenticator, you may need to go through the account recovery process. This typically involves verifying your identity through other means, such as email or SMS.
    3. Contact Support: If you are unable to recover your account through the above methods, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They may have additional recovery options available.
    4. Use Alternative Methods: If you need immediate access to your accounts and cannot recover the Authenticator, check if you can use other authentication methods, such as recovery codes or backup email addresses.

Unfortunately, if you do not have any recovery options set up, it may not be possible to regain access to the old Authenticator app directly.
