If you're unable to send text messages through Outlook, it could be due to several reasons, including issues with your instant messaging client settings. Make sure that the DefaultIMApp registry value is set correctly for your installed IM client. Here are the steps to check and modify this setting:
- Exit Outlook and your IM client.
- Open the Registry Editor by pressing Windows Key + R, typing
regedit.exe, and pressing Enter. - Navigate to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\IM Providers. - Look for the
DefaultIMAppstring value. If it’s not present, you’ll need to create it:- Right-click on IM Providers, select New, then String Value.
- Rename it to DefaultIMApp.
- Modify the value to match your IM client:
- For Microsoft Teams, set it to Teams.
- For Skype for Business, set it to Lync.
- Exit the Registry Editor, restart your IM client, and then start Outlook again.
If the issue persists, ensure that your Outlook and Windows software are up to date, as outdated software can also cause problems with messaging.
