Windows Reactivation

Years ago, I had a Windows 10 license with my old desktop computer. I've made some upgrades to my hardware over the years and when I upgraded to Windows 11 with a new CPU, it gave me a free license. I didn't think much of it in the moment, so I just ran with the free version up until now (it's been about 2-3 years I think). Now I'm wondering if there's a way to get the full version of Windows 11 without having to pay for the license because I've already bought one for Windows 10. Do I need to buy a new license, or can I just receive a new one for Windows 11? Not sure if that's how it works, but it seems like I shouldn't have to pay for a full new license if I've already bought one in the past.

Hi! Generally, a Windows 10 license works on Windows 11. But perhaps the license you had on your old computer was an OEM license.

OEM licenses are installed by computer manufacturers and come pre-installed on computers. OEM licenses are not transferable and expire when you change hardware, such as the motherboard. You probably lost your license when you changed hardware. That's why the version of Windows 11 you're using is 'free'.
