I have a Dell laptop. After 6 years of purchase, Bitlocker was (somehow) activated. I spent 41 days to find my 48 digit number and my hard disk was unlocked. I retrieve some files but not some others. There must be '"hidden" somewhere. Can you help me?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know where the files were originally saved on your hard drive? Did you have a dedicated folder for these files, and are the entire folders missing, or is it just specific files that are missing from within a folder?

Could you also let me know what type of files they are - for example, pictures, or documents such as .docx, .xlsx, etc.?

Please go to Local Disk (C:) > Users > Your_Username and check if you can locate your files there.

Also, check for the missing files in the following locations:

    • The desktop Recycle Bin
    • OneDrive online
    • The OneDrive Recycle Bin/Trash folder

If you have already unlocked your BitLocker-encrypted drive and retrieved some files, but are still missing others, there are a few steps you can take to try to recover those files:

    1. Check Hidden Files: Sometimes files can be hidden. Make sure to enable the option to view hidden files in your file explorer settings.
    2. Use File Recovery Software: If the files were deleted or lost during the encryption process, you might consider using file recovery software. There are various tools available that can help recover lost files from a hard drive.
    3. BitLocker Repair Tool: If the drive is corrupted, you can use the BitLocker Repair Tool to attempt to recover data. This tool can help reconstruct critical parts of a drive and salvage recoverable data.
    4. Backup and Restore: If you have any backups of your files (e.g., on cloud storage or external drives), check those backups to see if the missing files are available there.
    5. Professional Data Recovery Services: If the data is critical and you cannot recover it using the above methods, consider reaching out to a professional data recovery service. They may have advanced tools and techniques to recover lost data.

Make sure to act quickly, as continued use of the drive can overwrite the data you are trying to recover.
