New documents are only giving me the option to save as a .pdf or .xps and not .doc

Old Documents are only opening in "protected view" and won't allow me to take that off.

My Microsoft Office subscription is active.

Please help. This is very frustrating and basically not allowing me to do anything to my Word documents.

    Hi Cheryl,

The underlying reason for Word only offering .pdf or .xps as save options and opening documents in Protected View is likely a misconfiguration or corruption in your Office installation, possibly combined with restrictive security settings. When these settings block editable formats, Word cannot allow normal saving or editing.

To resolve this, first, check Trust Center settings: go to File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Protected View and temporarily disable Protected View for files from external sources. Second, verify File Block Settings are not preventing .doc or .docx files from opening. Lastly, if issues persist, run an Office repair (Control Panel → Programs → Microsoft Office → Change → Quick Repair; use Online Repair if needed) to restore full functionality, including saving in standard Word formats and editing previously restricted documents.

I have the exact same issue that developed on January 25, 2026. The interesting thing about it is that the problem surfaced out of the blue with a Windows 11 machine that was working fine for more than one year. I took the advice from Diana Mariz, as shown below regarding the "Block Settings". Sure enough, the machine "blocked" Word from saving any file in a .doc or .docx format. How this can occur without the user performing any kind of an update is a mystery.

However, since I attempted to use the Office "repair" utility yesterday to solve the problem, M/S simply downloaded a new Office and now demands a product key or Office is terminated in five days. Terrific.

The "block settings" , changed by an unknown source, prevented Word from saving anything in .doc or .docx.
