Whenever I try to open a Word document, I get multiple pop-ups that say "Word cannot open the existing file C:\Users[my name]\AppData...\Normal.dotm" It still opens the document but I can't get rid of the pop-ups. This started when I installed a Microsoft Works converter, which I have since uninstalled.

I followed the steps to rename normal.dotm I now have the error message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

Try running an Office Repair. The Online Repair option is more thorough.
