PXE boot failing - error 0x102

We've been doing PXE boot for a long time. We have an office that doesn't have a DP located in it, so we decided to build one on a Win10 PC. The build of the DP went fine, and we added PXE to it, the same way we've done at all our other sites.

  • We have a Meraki device that handles DHCP for the site.
  • On this Meraki, we fill in option 66 and 67, to point to the DP/PXE server, and the file path for the boot image.

When we tested yesterday, the client machine sits at a screen saying "Contacting Server (10.x.x.x):" with the correct IP to the new PXE server. After a little bit, it changes to: "Windows Deployment Services encountered an error: Error Code: 0x102"

I've checked the smspxe.log, and don't see any errors. I do see the client make a connection, and PXE figuring out what task sequences are needed, and then just notification statements saying "In SSL, but no client cert".

The only thing I've found online is reference to DHCP options, but it is setup the exact same way as every other PXE site we have.

    Hi @Joe Heaton ,

    1. The error code 0x102 means "The wait operation timed out." The issue may be network related.

2.General speaking, Microsoft does not recommend using DHCP options, the recommended and supported method for PXE booting client computers on remote subnets is to use IP Helpers. Notice that, in certain instances, configuring DHCP options 60, 66, and 67 may make it appear that the PXE boot process is proceeding further along than it did before these options were configured. However, in most cases, the process is actually proceeding along an incorrect path.
