Authenticator Trouble

I am not able to get my authenticator app with my account. So when I log in on the outlook app, it says authenticate in the app so I try to add my account to that app and within the authenticator app it tells me to authenticate in the authenticator app but I can't get in. My phone number is correct, but I don't actually receive any of the codes they text me. This has also been an issue for work emails before. Is there a number I should check if I've blocked and that's why I can't get the codes? I don't see any like that in my list. I'm so sad because someone from Spain has been trying to log into my account so I was finally able to change my password and log in but I want to get this email to work in the authenticator app but there's no way to even open the sign-in to a browser and still use the app. I have two other accounts that have worked in the authenticator app but not this one. The phone number is the really annoying part too because the one on file is mine, but I never get the messages. Can there only be one account linked to the same phone number? Because I only have one phone and multiple accounts so that doesn't make sense.

Hello Lindsay R, thanks for posting this in the community.

Are you using a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?

If this is a personal Microsoft account, have you changed your mobile phone previously? There are known cases where users replaced their phone and did not restore or re‑register their Microsoft Authenticator, which can result in an MFA loop.

If possible, please try accessing https://account.microsoft.com/security using a desktop or laptop you normally use. If you are unable to proceed due to MFA, this would indicate that the existing MFA registration needs to be reset. Once access is restored, you can re‑register Microsoft Authenticator on your current phone.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with receiving authentication codes for your Outlook account through the Microsoft Authenticator app. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check Blocked Numbers: Ensure that you haven't accidentally blocked any numbers that might be sending you the authentication codes. You mentioned you checked your list, but it's worth verifying with your mobile carrier if there are any additional blocks.
    2. SMS Delivery Issues: Sometimes, SMS delivery can be unreliable due to network issues or carrier restrictions. If possible, try using the Microsoft Authenticator app to generate codes instead of relying on SMS. The app can generate codes even without a cellular signal.
    3. Multiple Accounts: You can link multiple accounts to the same phone number in the Microsoft Authenticator app. However, if you're having trouble with one specific account, it might be worth checking if that account has any specific settings or restrictions that could be causing the issue.
    4. Recovery Options: If you're unable to access the authenticator app, consider using recovery options such as backup codes or alternative verification methods (like email or phone call) if they are set up.
    5. Contact Support: If the issue persists, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance. They can help you reset your authentication methods and ensure your account is secure.

Since you mentioned someone from Spain trying to access your account, it's crucial to ensure your account security is prioritized. Changing your password was a good step, but also consider enabling additional security measures if available.
