Hello Warren, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
Can you confirm whether it’s really Microsoft 365, or if it might be a one‑time purchase such as Office 2021, 2019, or 2016? They behave very differently when it comes to activation. Microsoft 365 subscriptions do not use product keys at all and activate only by signing in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. One‑time versions require a product key and will prompt for it again if Windows loses activation info or the device changes.
From what you described, it sounds much more like a one‑time Office purchase rather than Microsoft 365. If this is the case, and the key was already redeemed in the past, you don’t need to re‑type the key.
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and you should see the product listed on your Services & subscriptions page.
- Uninstall the current Office installation (Settings > Apps > Installed apps > find Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 > Uninstall) to avoid any version conflict.
- Download and install Office from the Services & subscriptions page.
- After installation, open Office and sign in to your Microsoft account, and Office should automatically activate.
