Office 365 passcode help

My Windows 10 laptop battery passed away. I replaced the battery and charged the laptop up to 100%. The laptop works normally now, except Office 365 will not let me access the program. It asks for a very old forgotten password or Key code. Where can I find that key, since the program was downloaded from my other desktop license. I've been told I may be able to find that Key in my digital locker, but I've forgotten how to get there. Lots of questions, but happy with the 365 program.

Hello Warren, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Can you confirm whether it’s really Microsoft 365, or if it might be a one‑time purchase such as Office 2021, 2019, or 2016? They behave very differently when it comes to activation. Microsoft 365 subscriptions do not use product keys at all and activate only by signing in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. One‑time versions require a product key and will prompt for it again if Windows loses activation info or the device changes.

From what you described, it sounds much more like a one‑time Office purchase rather than Microsoft 365. If this is the case, and the key was already redeemed in the past, you don’t need to re‑type the key.

  • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and you should see the product listed on your Services & subscriptions page.
  • Uninstall the current Office installation (Settings > Apps > Installed apps > find Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 > Uninstall) to avoid any version conflict.
  • Download and install Office from the Services & subscriptions page.
  • After installation, open Office and sign in to your Microsoft account, and Office should automatically activate.

Thank you again for your help Thomas4-N. I don't know what I did, but after entering what I thought might be the password, I can now enter the programs. Then I received another message that Microsoft 365 and Office were updating. I don't know if that meant I received another copy of the Microsoft 365 program and another copy of just updates for Office. It took about 25 minutes to run, so I think that was a long time just update the Office Program. Anyway, I can now use my Office program and with your help, I can close this ticket. Thank you again.
