The error is because the user account with the email/UPN [thompson@]xxx.com already exists in Microsoft Entra ID.
- When Azure AD Connect tries to create a new user from the on-premises directory (PII Removed) during synchronization, Entra ID finds that attributes like the UPN and proxy address are already being used by an existing cloud-only account.
- The synchronization reports a conflict and prevents the creation of a new account since these attributes must be unique.

Sync fails due to a UPN conflict between a cloud-only user and a directory-synced user representing the same individual. Syncing two different user objects is not supported by Microsoft Entra ID.
- Hence Select one authoritative account as a result.
- Delete the duplicate cloud-only user, change the on-prem AD UPN to match, then run Azure AD Connect sync.
- Alternatively, you can use ImmutableID to hardmatch the users.
Sync works with a single combined identity.
