PC requiring reset of Microsoft PIN

After an update, my PC is requiring the reset of my PIN, stating that my PIN is no longer available due to a change in security settings on the device, however when I go through the initial steps and respond to the Microsoft Authenticator text I then get a message advising that, if I change my PIN, apps might require me to sign in again and any data that’s managed by an organisation could be lost. My so. Is worried about losing his work on one drive and indeed anything else on his laptop, should he be concerned?
