Style Separator and Inline Text Issues

Recently I returned to some documents and found all my headers with numbering via a multilevel list and inline test working incorrectly. The navigation pane shows the correct numbering but word is not rendering the numbering. After examining previous versions and rebuilding my multilevel lists I confirmed it was not an issue with my implementation.

For clarity the following is what it should look like.

1.1 Subheading Text. Subheading paragraph of the normal style. Etc.

Word is displaying this without the numbers although the correct numbering is in the navigation pane.

Subheading Text. Subheading paragraph of the normal style. Etc.

If I remove the style separator it works.

1.1 Subheading Text.

Subheading paragraph of the normal style. Etc.

This is a major problem for me and has rendered numerous documents and hundreds of pages to be unusable. Using Co-Pilot i found the following Microsoft Issue regarding 27 Jan 2026.

Last Updated: January 27, 2026

ISSUE

After upgrading to version 2512 (build 16.0.19530) or later, users may find that heading numbering disappears when a Style Separator is used.

STATUS: INVESTIGATING

The Word team is currently investigating the issue.

I used Co-Pilot again to help me pause updates and revert to Version 2511 (Build 19426.20218 Click-to-Run)

This did NOT fix the issue. I deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data Settings file with no success either.

What can I do to continue working without ruined templates/docs. Is there an alternative to the style separator or should I revert to an earlier build?

This is a known issue, as you have noticed. It is documented in the article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/heading-numbering-disappears-after-applying-style-separator-in-word-535fed39-64eb-4ac1-a2c6-48f15dfd5ed5.

A workaround, suggested by users in Q&A, is to temporarily save a document in the older *.doc format.
