'Add Output' is disabled in Copilot Studio's Prompt tool even with structured JSON output. Unable to see output of Prompt tool in Topics.

I've created a Prompt tool with a custom JSON output. I face the same problem with text output too btw.
When the tool is saved and being configured, I do not see any output in the Completions section.
I have the exact same problem in Topics as well, when this tool is added as a node.
Even though I tried several things - change format, duplicate, create new tool, create from inside Agent, change completion after running... I still have the same problem... cannot get an output from the Prompt tool.
Interestingly, in the Test of tool's Instructions, I can see the output. In Completion, nothing.
I checked for any environment controls via Power Admin but there are no environments created either.

Maria Samuel 0 Reputation points2026-02-10T21:55:24.11+00:00 I have been experiencing the same situation. However my scenario returns an adaptive card for user to select a choice from. I want to capture the output based on the user selection but I am at my wits end how to do that.
Please respond to this scenario as well. How can I capture Action.Submit event from the adaptive card returned from the prompt tool.

The “Completion” section for Prompt tools sometimes does not show outputs, even if the tool works in the Test pane. This affects both JSON and text outputs, and also impacts Topics when the tool is used as a node. The Test pane output confirms your tool logic is correct; the issue is with output mapping/display in the UI.Workarounds:
- Ensure your tool’s output is set to “Specific” and add the output fields manually in the Completion section (sometimes the UI does not auto-populate).
- If outputs still don’t appear, try referencing the tool’s output in a Topic node using a formula (e.g., $toolName.outputField).
- If the output is not available for downstream nodes, this is a platform bug—report it via Microsoft support or feedback.

Use Prompts inside PowerAutomate, create flows that use a Run A Prompt in PowerAutomate and call that flow inside Copilot Studio.
