We are using document templates that contain embedded Excel objects. When I open a template on my Windows laptop and save the file directly to OneDrive, I receive the following error message: "This object was created in Excel. That program is not installed on this computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Excel or ensure that all dialog boxes in Excel are closed."

However, when I save the same file locally on my laptop (for example to the desktop or local drive), the error does not occur. Why does this issue occur?

The error message you are encountering when trying to save an Excel template with embedded objects directly to OneDrive may be related to how Excel interacts with cloud storage versus local storage. When saving to OneDrive, Excel may be attempting to access certain features or functionalities that are not fully supported or are encountering issues due to the cloud environment. This can include problems with the embedded objects not being recognized properly or Excel not being able to communicate effectively with OneDrive.

In contrast, saving the file locally on your laptop allows Excel to function without the potential complications introduced by cloud synchronization, which may explain why the error does not occur in that scenario.

To troubleshoot this issue, consider the following steps:

  1. Ensure that your version of Excel is fully updated.
  2. Check if there are any add-ins or settings that might be interfering with the functionality when saving to OneDrive.
  3. Try clearing any temporary files or cache related to Excel that might be affecting its performance with OneDrive.

If the issue persists, you may want to consult Microsoft support for further assistance specific to your setup.
