Microsoft 365 Premium business user. Need to upgrade to windows 11 pro prior to signing in and setting up. Copilot says get upgrade license. I have done thiss several time before but my microsoft store account is a family 365 account and I cannot find the upgrade link. Would like to have a detailed account how to properly upgrade. Previously I have made a mess by signing in with family account befor eupgrade then trying to set up a office 365 account.

A digital license means your Windows 11 Pro entitlement is tied to your Microsoft account rather than a product key. Once a device is activated with Pro, that license is stored online and will automatically reapply if you reinstall or reset the OS on the same hardware. For a new machine that ships with Windows 11 Home, you cannot transfer the Pro license from another device; you must purchase an upgrade for that specific hardware. The upgrade is only visible in the Microsoft Store when signed in with the account that owns the Pro license, not a Family 365 account. If you sign in with the wrong account before upgrading, the Store won’t show the Pro option, which is why you’ve run into issues. The correct process is to first activate the device with Windows 11 Home, then open Settings > System > Activation > Upgrade your edition of Windows, and purchase the Pro upgrade while signed in with the business account that holds your Microsoft 365 subscription. You do not need to buy a full retail copy unless you want to perform a clean install without upgrading; the upgrade license is sufficient as long as it’s purchased under the correct account.

What does a digital license mean? I have several computers on Windows 11 Pro. TO purchase an upgrade was easy once the computer is activated. Copilot gave instructions not to sign in with new computer until Pro was installed.

Do I need to purchase a full version of Win pro to put on the new machine. I have purchased upgrade in past but when I search the store from my family account the upgrade option is not available

To upgrade your new computer from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro as a Microsoft 365 Business Premium user, you can follow these steps:

    1. Purchase Windows 11 Pro: Since you are using a family Microsoft 365 account, ensure that you have the necessary upgrade rights. You may need to purchase a Windows 11 Pro license if you haven't done so already.
    2. Access the Microsoft Store: On your Windows 11 Home device, open the Microsoft Store app.
      • Search for Windows 11 Pro in the store.
      • Select the option to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
      • Follow the prompts to complete the purchase and installation.
    3. Upgrade via Windows Update: If you have a digital license:
      • Sign in with your Microsoft 365 Business Premium account.
      • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
      • Check for updates. If your device is eligible, you will see an option to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
      • Follow the prompts to complete the upgrade.
    4. Using the Microsoft Software Download site: If you prefer, you can also upgrade using the Microsoft Software Download site:
      • Visit the Microsoft Software Download site and select Update now to start the upgrade process.
    5. Create Installation Media: If you want to install Windows 11 Pro on a different device, you can create installation media:
      • Go to the Microsoft Software Download site and follow the instructions to create a USB flash drive or ISO file.

Make sure that your Microsoft 365 Business Premium license is assigned to your account before starting the upgrade process. This will ensure that you have access to the necessary features and benefits of the Business Premium subscription.

If you encounter issues related to signing in with a family account, consider using a separate Microsoft account that is linked to your Business Premium subscription for the upgrade process.
