Want to create subscription in my default tenant

I cannot create subscription under my default tenant in Azure. I need to switch but there no other tenant or a possibility to create one. Would be ideal to create one in the default tenant.

Hey @Ken Van der Auwera, it sounds like you don’t yet have any Azure billing account tied to your default directory, which is why you can’t spin up a subscription there. Here’s what you can check and try:

    1. Verify you have a billing account (MCA/EA/CSP/MOSP) or a free-trial signing
      • If you’re brand new, head to https://signup.azure.com/ (or click “Start free” in the portal) to create a Pay-As-You-Go/free-trial billing account under your default tenant.
      • If you’re part of an Enterprise Agreement (EA) or Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), make sure your user is assigned the Owner/Contributor or “Subscription Creator” role on the billing account, billing profile or invoice section.
    2. Make sure you’re in the right directory
      • In the Azure portal, click your account avatar in the upper right → “Switch Directory” → select your default tenant.
      • If you only see one directory, that’s fine—just confirm you’re in it.
    3. Create the subscription
      • Go to Subscriptions → Add.
      • On the Basics tab, give it a name, pick your Billing account, Billing profile and Invoice section.
      • On the Advanced tab, confirm the Subscription directory (your default tenant), pick a management group (optional) and subscription owners.
      • Review + Create.
    4. If the “Add” button is missing or greyed out
      • Confirm your role on the billing account/invoice section (Owner/Contributor or Subscription Creator).
      • Clear browser cache or try an InPrivate/Incognito window (sometimes stale cookies auto-sign you into a guest/other account).
      • Run through the “No subscriptions found” sign-in checklist: • Correct account (MSA vs Work/School) • Correct directory selected • Sufficient permissions

If you still can’t see an Add button or get permission-related errors, could you share:

    • What type of billing account you’re using (Free Trial, Pay-As-You-Go, MCA, EA, CSP)?

    • Your role on that billing account or invoice section (Owner, Contributor, Subscription Creator)?

    • A screenshot of what you see when you go to Subscriptions in the portal?

Hope that helps! Let me know the billing-account details and portal view if you’re still blocked.

To create a subscription in the default Microsoft Entra tenant, the account must both:

    1. Have a valid billing account and
    2. Have the required billing permissions.

Key points from the behavior described:

    1. Subscriptions are always created in a Microsoft Entra tenant, not in an Azure AD B2C or B2B tenant. If the “default tenant” is actually an Azure AD B2C tenant, subscriptions cannot be created there. In that case, a subscription must be created in a regular Microsoft Entra tenant and then linked if needed.
    2. Required roles for Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) subscriptions:
      • Owner or Contributor on the invoice section, billing profile, or billing account, or
      • Azure subscription creator role on the invoice section.
Without one of these roles, the portal will not allow creating a subscription, even if signed in to the correct tenant.
    3. If the billing account is Enterprise Agreement (EA):
      • An Enterprise Administrator or Account Owner can create subscriptions under the enrollment.
    4. Creating a subscription in the current (default) tenant vs. another tenant:
      • For MCA: use the standard “Create a Microsoft Customer Agreement subscription” flow to create a subscription in the current tenant.
      • Creating in another tenant (customer tenant) uses a subscription creation request flow; this is not needed if the goal is to create in the default tenant.
    5. If the tenant is B2C:
      • Subscriptions cannot be created or transferred into an Azure AD B2C tenant.
      • A subscription must be created in a regular Microsoft Entra tenant and then the B2C tenant can be linked to that subscription for billing.

    Actionable checks:

    1. Confirm tenant type:
      • If the default tenant is Azure AD B2C, do not attempt to create a subscription there. Instead, use a regular Microsoft Entra tenant and link the B2C tenant to a subscription.
    2. Confirm billing permissions:
      • In Cost Management + BillingBilling scopes, select the billing account.
      • Ensure the account has one of: billing account owner/contributor, billing profile owner/contributor, invoice section owner, or Azure subscription creator on the invoice section (for MCA), or Enterprise Administrator/Account Owner (for EA).
    3. Once permissions are correct and the tenant is a regular Microsoft Entra tenant, use the standard subscription creation flow for MCA or EA as documented.

If the portal still shows no way to create a subscription even with correct roles and a valid billing account, the issue may be with the billing account state or an account flag and would require opening a support ticket from an existing subscription or via the billing account support channel.
