I want to change the primary setup email to an alias that has been added to this account

Our primary set up email was ******@xxxxxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com

I wish to demote this address to one I have created as an Alias on this account but doesn't offer me the ability to promote the Alias to Primary.

Any thoughts??

For personal Microsoft accounts, go to https://account.microsoft.comand then sign in, select Your info > Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, and under Account aliases choose Make primary if the option is available.

If it doesn’t appear, Microsoft does not allow that alias as primary; you need to add a new eligible alias to promote. For Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, only your admin can change the primary email.

The alias can be promoted to primary only if it meets Microsoft’s rules for primary aliases. Work or school addresses (including many *.onmicrosoft.com addresses tied to Microsoft 365 tenants) cannot be used as the primary alias for a personal Microsoft account.

Key points from the documented behavior:

1. A primary alias cannot be changed to an email address that is associated with a work or school account.
2. If the alias added on this account is considered a work or school address (for example, an onmicrosoft.com address tied to an Azure AD/Microsoft 365 tenant), it will not appear as eligible for Make primary.
3. To change the primary alias, a supported personal email alias must be used instead (for example, an Outlook.com/Hotmail.com address or a non‑Microsoft personal email such as Gmail/Yahoo that is added as an alias).

To see what can be made primary and change it where allowed:

1. Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft: https://account.live.com/names/manage and sign in.
2. Under Account aliases, review the list of aliases.
3. If a personal email address is listed, select Make primary next to it to set it as the primary alias.
4. If only the onmicrosoft.com address is present and the desired alias is a work/school address, add a personal email alias instead via Add email, verify it, and then select Make primary for that personal alias.

If the alias is a work or school address, it cannot be promoted to primary on this personal Microsoft account; a different, supported personal alias must be used as primary instead.
