I am wanting to purchase the one time purchase vs a subscription but I am just unsure of the differences between the 2021 version and 2024?

Hi Carol, I have Office Home and Office 2003 Professional and Business 2013, 2019 and Professional 2021. the difference between Office Home and business 2021 and 2024 is that the 2024 version will have a few more features that were introduced to Microsoft 365 Personal during the period 2021 -2024 (not all the new features). In other words when you purchase a perpetual version of Office it does not receive all the new features introduced to Microsoft 365. It does get the odd one. You do get all the security updates. Note: Microsoft no longer sells Office Home and Business 20221.

You can purchase a legitimate 2024 version here: Microsoft Home and Business 2024

PS: I am in UK make sure that you go to wherever you are.

    Hello, Carol Gjerde.

Unlike subscriptions, these versions follow fixed support dates.:

    and

That is, after October 2026, Office 2021 will be discontinued and will no longer receive updates and fixes. Therefore, in order to stay on the current version longer, it is better to use Office 2024. Well, the latest version always wins in terms of functionality.

Office Home & Business 2021 and Office Home & Business 2024 are both one-time purchase, non-subscription Office suites, but they differ mainly in version, support lifecycle, and features available at the time of release.

Key points about Office 2024 vs earlier one-time purchase versions:

    1. Product type
    • Both are classic, one-time purchase Office suites installed on a single PC or Mac.
    • Office Home & Business 2024 includes classic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook installed on one PC or Mac.
    • Office 2021 is the previous generation of the same one-time purchase model.
    1. Version and feature set
    • Office 2024 is the newer version, so it includes the “essential tools” and classic apps at the 2024 feature level.
    • Office 2021 is frozen at the 2021 feature level. It receives security updates during its support period but no new features.
    • Like all one-time purchase suites, Office 2024 does not get ongoing new features after release; only security updates and fixes during its supported period.
    1. Support and longevity
    • Newer versions (Office 2024) have a later end-of-support date than Office 2021, so they receive security updates for longer.
    • Office 2019 and 2016 are already noted as no longer supported; Office 2021 will reach that point sooner than Office 2024.
    1. Cloud and AI features
    • One-time purchase suites (including both 2021 and 2024) do not include cloud-backed features or services that come with Microsoft 365 subscriptions (for example, OneDrive storage, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, or AI-powered Copilot features in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
    • If cloud services, Copilot, or continuously updated features are needed, a Microsoft 365 subscription is required instead of either Office 2021 or 2024 one-time purchase.
    1. Devices and licensing
    • Office Home & Business 2024 (like other one-time purchases) can be installed on only one PC or Mac.
    • Microsoft 365 subscriptions, by contrast, can be installed on multiple devices and signed in on up to five at once, but that is a different product family from the one-time purchase suites.
    1. Upgrade path
    • Moving from Office Home & Business 2021 to Office Home & Business 2024 is essentially buying the newer non-subscription version. There is no in-place upgrade discount path described; it is treated as a new one-time purchase.
    • Office 2024 is the recommended choice among non-subscription options if a longer support window and the latest one-time-purchase feature set are desired.

In summary: Office Home & Business 2024 is the newer, one-time purchase suite with classic apps and a longer remaining support lifecycle than Office Home & Business 2021. Neither includes ongoing feature updates, cloud services, or Copilot; those are reserved for Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
