    Hi @Michael Donahue

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum and for clearly outlining your concern.

Based on the details you shared that you are the only user in your business and need your email to have Microsoft 365 admin rights, and that the same email and password are not accepted when you try to download an application. I truly understand and appreciate your effort.

As this involves sensitive information, I will send you a Private Message with further details. Please reply to that message with additional information about your email and your domain so I can continue checking this for you and tailor the next steps.

I can sign into Microsoft 365 Admin Center, but that email and password combination is not working for my Admin login when I go to download an application. How can I manage Admins in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center?

In a Microsoft 365 for business tenant, only an existing administrator (or the original subscription owner) can grant or confirm admin rights on an account. Admin rights cannot be self-assigned by a standard user.

Use these approaches depending on the situation:

    1. If someone else created the subscription or gave the account
      • That person is typically the Microsoft 365 admin by default and must sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and assign the account an admin role.
      • If unsure who that is, contact:
        • Internal help desk / technical support (large business)
        • Business owner / co-owner or IT consultant (small business)
        • Technical support team at the school or university (education)
      • Guidance on finding the admin is in: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? and Find the administrator for your work or school account.
    2. If this is a single-user business subscription that was self‑purchased
      • By default, the person who signed up for and bought the Microsoft 365 for business subscription is the admin and already has admin rights on that work or school account.
      • That same account is used to sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and manage users, domains, and licenses.
    3. If locked out of the only admin account (for example, due to MFA issues)
      • When there is only one admin and access is lost (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator or MFA problems), Microsoft’s Data Protection team must be involved to restore access.
      • Use the regional Microsoft support phone number from the “Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support” page and request a service ticket for a tenant lockout as the only admin. Be prepared to verify identity and tenant ownership.

If the account in question is not the original subscription owner and there is no access to any existing admin account, only Microsoft support (via a verified support case) or the current tenant owner can change roles and grant admin rights.
