Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Xbox digital gifts and codes are region-locked. A code purchased in one country/region usually can only be redeemed on an account and console set to that same country/region. If the message says the code is for the wrong region, it cannot be redeemed by changing settings alone.
The supported options from Microsoft’s side are:
- Do not change the Microsoft account region just to redeem the gift.
- Microsoft explicitly warns that items and balances often do not work across regions, and account balance does not move if the region is changed.
- Changing region is only recommended when actually moving to a new country/region long term.
- Ask the purchaser to resolve it with the original retailer or Microsoft/Xbox support.
- If the wrong-region code was bought, the buyer must contact the retailer or platform where it was purchased and request a refund or a replacement code valid for the recipient’s region.
- For future gifts, ensure both accounts use the same country/region before purchasing.
- Gifts and codes should always be bought in the same region as the recipient’s Microsoft/Xbox account to avoid this error.
There is no supported way to bypass region locks (for example, via VPN or temporary region changes) and doing so can violate program policies.
