Outlook still supports message preview and zoom, but some behaviors have changed and may need to be reconfigured.
To restore and adjust message preview in the message list:
- Go to the View tab in Outlook.
- Select Message Preview.
- Choose 1 Line, 2 Lines, or 3 Lines.
- When prompted, select All mailboxes so the setting applies everywhere.
Note: During searches, Outlook may still show results without preview text depending on the search scope and data returned. This is by design and may not be fully changeable.
To enlarge content in the Reading Pane (preview area):
- Open Outlook and select a message.
- To temporarily zoom:
- Use the Zoom control at the bottom-right of the Outlook window, or
- Click in the Reading Pane, hold Ctrl, and scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in or out.
- To set a permanent default zoom for opened messages:
- Double‑click a message to open it in its own window.
- On the ribbon near the right end, select Zoom (or select the ellipsis (…) and then Zoom).
- Choose the zoom percentage.
- Select Remember my preference, then select OK.
If using Outlook for Mac (classic):
- At the bottom of the sidebar, choose Mail.
- Select a message.
- On the Format menu, choose Increase Font Size or Decrease Font Size to adjust Reading Pane text.
If the Reading Pane itself seems smaller or missing:
- On the Organize tab, select Reading Pane.
- Choose Right or Below to show it, or Hidden to turn it off.
- To resize, drag the border between the item list and the Reading Pane.
These options allow preview text to be visible again and the Reading Pane content to be enlarged so large volumes of mail can be scanned and sorted more efficiently.
