Hello Dawn J, thanks for posting this in the community.

This issue usually appears when Clipchamp cannot open the original media files used in your project. Clipchamp does not store copies of your videos or images inside the project file, so if the files were moved, renamed, deleted, or stored in a cloud or external drive that is not currently available, the editing tools will become grayed out. To fix this, reopen your project and check if Clipchamp shows any missing media messages. Make sure the original files are still in the same location as before or relink them using the Replace File option. Also confirm you are signed in with the same Microsoft account you used when you first created the project and that any OneDrive files are fully synced and available offline. Once Clipchamp can access the media again, the editing tools should work normally.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli

When an existing Clipchamp project opens but tools or media appear unavailable, it is usually because the project or its assets are not loading correctly rather than a permissions issue.

    Try the following in order:

    1. Reload the project
      • In the browser or Clipchamp app, reload the page (Ctrl+F5 or the Reload button), then reopen the project from the projects overview page.
      • Ensure the internet connection is active while doing this.
    2. Check that media files are loading
      • If media in the left-hand library shows a stuck loading percentage or a sad face, convert the original video files to MP4 using an external converter, save them, and add these new MP4 files to the project.
      • Clipchamp supports only certain formats; verify the files are in a supported format.
    3. Free up memory and disk space
      • Close other browser tabs and apps to free RAM.
      • Make sure the internal drive has more free space than the total size of the video files used in the project; low disk space can prevent projects from loading correctly and can make tools appear unusable.
    4. Disable or whitelist browser extensions (if using Clipchamp in a browser)
      • Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy, or translation extensions, then reload Clipchamp and reopen the project.
      • Alternatively, whitelist Clipchamp: for personal accounts, allow https://app.clipchamp.com/ in the extension’s “allowed sites” list, then restart the browser and reload Clipchamp.
    5. Clear browser cache and restart the browser
      • Sign out of Clipchamp.
      • Clear the browser cache (time range: “All time”; select only “Cached images and files”), then restart the browser using chrome://restart or edge://restart.
      • Sign back in and reopen the project.
    6. Advanced: clear Clipchamp site data
      • Ensure original media files (video, audio, images) are stored safely outside Clipchamp in case relinking is needed.
      • Open Developer Tools (3-dot menu → More tools → Developer tools), go to ApplicationStorage, select Clear site data, then refresh Clipchamp and reopen the project.

If the project and its media load successfully after these steps, editing tools should become active again and allow further changes to the existing project.
