How do I block Passkey prompts that keep interrupting logins?

Hello,

About half the time I try to login or visit webpages for various websites and retailers I get this constant aggressive passkey prompt to create a passkey.

I do not want to create a passkey, I will never use passkeys, I prefer login methods that are more reliable and less likely to violate my privacy.

I see an option that says "Ask to save passwords and passkeys", unsure why the passkeys are tied with the passwords, I do want passwords to autofill, I NEVER want passkeys to autofill.

I just want logging in to be simple without any roadblocks, these passkeys are not functional, I have tried to implement them twice, each time I got locked out of accounts, one account I had to go into account recovery to gain access again, none of the passkeys synced between devices so they made it so I could only log in on one device that had the passkey.

This is a mess. This was not done correctly at all.

How can I permanently block this passkey prompt?

nevergoingtousepasskeys

Thanks

Hi! Currently a single Microsoft-wide switch that blocks every passkey prompt across all websites. Many of those prompts are triggered by the individual site you are signing in to, not by Windows alone, so declining the prompt on one site does not stop other sites from offering passkeys later. On the Microsoft side, what you can control is whether Windows passkey services are enabled and whether Edge is allowed to save passwords and passkeys. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options and turn off the passkey services you do not want to use. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager > More settings and review the Ask to save passwords and passkeys option, since that affects whether Edge offers to save them locally.

Passkeys are offered to you by the websites that you visit. Thus, if you have an opinion on their promotion of passkeys, you must contact these websites individually.

Your Microsoft account is actually a website, and Microsoft does promote a passkey for your Microsoft account because, contrary to your belief, passkeys are very much more secure than passwords, and they significantly increase your privacy online. This is why websites promote passkeys. You can't block the prompts, but you're not required to accept the passkey.

In your situation, you need to find out why your computer has so many problems implementing passkeys. Passkeys work without a hitch on my computer.

I will gladly explain the advantages of a passkey, but that is beyond the scope of your question.
