The error "Synchronizing subscribed folders for gmail account" in classic Outlook with a Gmail account typically indicates a problem with the Gmail/IMAP connection or the Google permissions granted to Outlook.
Use these steps:
- Confirm the specific Gmail/Outlook issue
- If the full error resembles:
- "Task: ‘Synchronizing subscribed folders for ******@gmail.com.' reported error (0x800CCC0E): ‘Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for ******@gmail.com. Error: Cannot connect to the server…'"
- This matches a known issue when the required Google permission was not granted during sign-in.
- Check Outlook build and use the Retry flow
- Make sure Outlook is on Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later. See About Office: What version of Office am I using? for how to check.
- When the error appears, select the Retry link in the error window.
- In the browser sign-in page for Google, ensure the checkbox is selected for:
- "Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail." under Select what Microsoft apps & services can access.
- Complete sign-in and let Outlook resync.
- Ensure Gmail folders are exposed via IMAP
- In a browser, go to Gmail.com and sign in.
- Select Settings (gear icon) > See all settings > Labels tab.
- For at least these labels, make sure Show in IMAP is selected:
- Inbox
- Sent Mail
- Trash
- All Mail
- Optionally enable Show in IMAP for any other labels that should appear in Outlook.
- Refresh Outlook
- After adjusting Gmail settings, refresh Outlook and allow time for sync:
- It can take up to 15 minutes for syncing to refresh.
If the account was added before the permission fix and Retry does not resolve it, remove the Gmail account from the Outlook profile and add it again, making sure to grant the full Gmail access permission during the Google sign-in step.
