This message comes from the System Configuration utility (msconfig) when using options like Diagnostic startup or Selective startup.
It means that System Configuration tried to save a copy of the current “original boot configuration” (the normal set of services, drivers, and startup items) so it can restore it later, but a required file or registry entry was missing, corrupted, or inaccessible. As a result, Windows shows:
System configuration cannot save the original boot configuration for later restoration. The system cannot find the file specified.
In practice this indicates some configuration or registry corruption related to boot/startup settings. When this happens, System Configuration cannot reliably revert to the exact previous startup state after troubleshooting.
Using Diagnostic startup or Selective startup still works for troubleshooting, but returning to the exact original configuration may not be fully automatic because that baseline snapshot could not be saved.
