The message usually appears when Office apps cannot reach Microsoft online services, even if the device is connected to the internet.

    Try these steps:

    1. Verify general internet access
      • Open a web browser and confirm other websites load correctly.
    2. Check OneDrive status
      • Make sure OneDrive is running and signed in on the PC.
      • Confirm that OneDrive is not out of storage; if storage is exceeded, new files cannot be uploaded or synced. To see remaining space or get more storage, go to the Storage page linked from OneDrive help.
    3. Confirm the correct account and permissions
      • If the Excel workbook is in a OneDrive-synced folder, ensure the account used in Excel has permission to upload to that OneDrive.
      • This error can occur if Excel is signed in with an account that does not have permission to upload to the OneDrive location where the file is stored.
      • In Excel, go to File → Account and check the signed-in account. Sign out and sign back in with the same account that owns the OneDrive storage.
    4. Try saving again
      • After confirming the account and OneDrive status, try saving the workbook again to the OneDrive location.

If the issue persists, unlink and relink OneDrive, then try saving again.

Can you go check your Windows Settings > Windows update, and see if you might have  KB5085516 available to install?

KB5085516 was released on March 21st to address Microsoft account sign in issue among some apps caused by KB5079473 https://support.microsoft.com/topic/march-21-2026-kb5085516-os-builds-26200-8039-and-26100-8039-out-of-band-09e85404-1cb6-4ed4-9ca5-3e40d74307b9
