Error CroosDeviceResume.exe

As soon as I turn on my PC, I get an error message saying there's a location on drive C ending in "CroosDeviceResume.exe" and that "The parameter is incorrect." What could be the problem? Also, I can't type in the taskbar, and Internet Explorer isn't working. The folder microsoftwindows.client.CBS_cw5n1h... is missing from drive C.

Regards

    Hi Pablo,

I understand how alarming this is, and you’re right to be concerned. Based on the description, it's likely that Windows component store / UWP package is broken. The Q&A Assist has actually pointed to the correct path, so I suggest you check out their suggestions. If they don't work and you have to get to reset PC, please try the reinstallation repair below first:

    1 - Use built-in repair option

    • Open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update
    • Click Reinstall now > follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Windows.

Disclaimer: This reinstallation can fix update issues without removing your files or applications. However, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up.

    2 - Perform an in-place upgrade

Disclaimer: An in-place install or in-place upgrade will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes.

3 - Reset PC from Recovery

    • Power on the PC > force shutdown during boot 3 times to trigger recovery
    • When in WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Reset this PC
    • Choose Keep my files > Local reinstall > Confirm and let it complete

Disclaimer: This allows you to keep your files, but your applications and settings will be removed.

As you can see the number 1 and 2 above (Reinstallation repairs) let you keep your files and apps, while Reset PC only keeps your files. However, if nothing works, you might need to perform a clean install to get your PC back into a working condition: Reinstall Windows with the installation media - Microsoft Support. This solution will unfortunately delete all your data.

The symptoms indicate system file or driver corruption, possibly after a failed update or software change. The missing system folder and the CroosDeviceResume.exe error suggest Windows components are damaged, which can also explain why typing in the taskbar and Internet Explorer are not working.

Start with system repair steps and driver checks:

    1. Run System File Checker (SFC)
      1. Click Start, type cmd in the Search box.
      2. In the results, right‑click cmd.exe and select Run as administrator.
      3. At the command prompt, type:
              sfc /scannow

        and press Enter.
      4. Wait for the scan to complete. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing system files it can. If prompted, insert installation media.
    2. Scan for malware/virus infections
      1. Use installed antivirus software to run a full scan.
      2. If no antivirus is installed, install one (for example, Microsoft Security Essentials where applicable) and run a complete scan to ensure no malware is causing the CroosDeviceResume.exe error or blocking system components.
    3. Boot into Safe Mode to test behavior
      1. Start the PC in Safe Mode.
      2. In Safe Mode, check whether the CroosDeviceResume.exe error still appears and whether typing in the taskbar and Internet Explorer work.
      3. If the issues persist even in Safe Mode, continue with deeper repair (such as a reset/repair install). If they do not, a third‑party driver or software loaded during normal startup is likely involved.
    4. Update device drivers and Windows
      1. After SFC and malware checks, ensure device drivers (especially video, keyboard, and other core devices) are up to date.
      2. Use Windows Update to install all available updates. If Windows Update is not working, repair system files first (SFC) and then try again.

If these steps do not resolve the error and missing system components, a Windows repair or reset (keeping personal files) may be required to restore the damaged system files and folders.
