RDP requies password even with Always prompt for password upon connection disabled

Hi all,

I have several servers and one day some of them started to prompt for the password in RDP. There is no correlation with OS version, some servers 2016 and 2019 are affected, some - not. There was neither 3rd party software installation no GPO changing. All servers are not in a domain. Also didn't find anything suspicious in Windows logs.

I set "Always prompt for password upon connection" to disabled (it was Not configured before), but this didn't help.

I tried different RDP clients (windows default with "Save credentials", MobaXterm, MremoteNG) without any success.

Any idea about this please?

    Hello @Olga

It is possible that you have enabled NLA (even by some updates due to many security concerns and exploits worldwide since last year). Please check the next post where it describes similar scenario and how to fix it (only authenticating to the remote server logon screen):

    Disable NLA: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c07323c2-77fa-4eb4-91ed-7ba6fa23bd00/how-to-disable-nla?forum=winserversecurity

Hope this helps with your query,
