I recently purchased a refurbished Dell Inspiron with Win11 Pro. The OS should have this program installed, and I have a subscription to 365, neither work on this laptop. I attempted to repair from the site, but the new install always fails, please advise.

Hello !

Do you see an error code or message when you try to install Office ? If so, what is it ?

Also, when you purchased your computer, did you receive a license key to activate your subscription ? In what form did you receive Microsoft 365 ?

As mentioned by the AI answer, try to fully uninstall previous installations of Office, and try to install Office again. You can get the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant here : https://aka.ms/SaRASetup

Looking forward to your answer !

Follow these steps on the Windows 11 Dell Inspiron to get Microsoft 365 working:

  1. Confirm Windows version
    • Microsoft 365 requires a supported OS. On the laptop, open Settings → System → About and confirm it is running a supported version of Windows 11.
    • If the OS is not supported, update Windows first, or use the free Microsoft 365 apps in a browser instead.
  2. Run the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter
    • On the same Windows 11 PC, use the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter to fix install issues:
      1. Go to the Troubleshoot installing Office article and select Start under “Use the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter to install Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016 on your Windows PC.”
      2. When prompted, allow the site to open Get Help.
      3. Follow the prompts and restart the computer when asked.
    • This requires Windows 10 or higher, which the Dell Inspiron meets.
  3. If install still fails, repair the Office installation
    • On Windows 11:
      1. Right-click the Start button and select Installed apps.
      2. Find Microsoft 365 or Office, select the ellipses () and choose Modify.
      3. In the repair dialog:
        • For Click-to-Run installs, choose Online Repair → Repair (more thorough than Quick Repair).
        • For MSI-based installs, choose Repair → Continue.
      4. Complete the repair and then try starting Word/Excel again.
  4. If activation is the problem
    • If apps install but will not activate or show subscription errors, run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for activation:
      1. From the Office error "Account Notice: We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription" article, select Start under the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter.
      2. Run it on the same PC and follow the prompts.
  5. If all else fails: uninstall and reinstall
    • Deactivate and completely remove Office, then reinstall:
      1. Deactivate the install (see Deactivate a Microsoft 365 install in the activation article).
      2. Use the easy fix tool from Uninstall Microsoft 365 from a PC to completely uninstall Office.
      3. Reinstall from the Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac article, signing in with the Microsoft account that has the 365 subscription.

If the installer reports an unsupported operating system or device at any point, verify that the correct Windows (not Mac) installer is being used and that the device is not a Chromebook or other unsupported platform.
