The Format Background option from the Draw tab won't save with the document.

Each time you close and reopen the document, the option "None" will be reselected.

    Hello,

Does the background appear in all new documents or only in one file?

Open the affected document, go to the Design tab, select Page Color, then choose No Color. If it still remains, go to View, switch to Print Layout, then return to Design > Page Color > No Color again. If the issue persists, create a new blank document, copy all content except the last paragraph mark into it, then save the new file, as hidden formatting in the original file can keep the background applied.

In Word there are two different ways to set page background, and they are reset in different places.

    1. If the background was set with Layout > Page Color:
      1. Go to the Layout tab.
      2. Select Page Color.
      3. Click No Color to remove the background.
    2. If the background was set with Draw > Format Background (ink/drawing background):
      • Open the same document.
      • Go to the Draw tab.
      • Click Format Background again and change or clear the background from there (for example, set it back to a plain color or default). This feature controls the drawing/ink background and ruled/grid lines, so it must be changed from the same place it was applied.

If the change is stored in a template (for example, Normal.dotm), open that template directly, clear the background using the steps above, then save and close the template so new documents no longer inherit the blocked background.
