To fix “insufficient memory or disk space” errors when saving a Word document, use these steps:
- Free disk space and memory
- Close other programs that are open to reduce memory and paging file usage.
- Wait a few minutes after closing programs so Windows can shrink the paging file and free disk space.
- Run Disk Cleanup (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP)
- Click Start.
- Point to Programs (or All Programs in Windows XP) → Accessories → System Tools → Disk Cleanup.
- In Select Drive, choose the drive where Word is installed or where documents are saved (for example, C:), and click OK.
- On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the file types to remove (temporary files, recycle bin, etc.).
- Click OK to delete the selected files and free space.
- Save to a different location
- Try saving the document to another drive that has free space (for example, another hard disk or network drive).
- If saving to removable media, use a disk that has enough free space.
- Check antivirus software
- Temporarily turn off the antivirus software.
- Try saving the document again.
- If the problem is resolved, contact the antivirus vendor for an update or workaround.
- If the document is on a floppy disk
- Verify that the floppy disk is not full.
- If it is full, save the document to a different floppy disk or to the hard drive.
If the error persists even after freeing space and trying another location, the issue may be related to a known bug in older Word versions; using the workarounds above (freeing disk space, changing save location, and checking antivirus) is the recommended approach.
