When I hit the backspace button in Word or One Note it will only go back one space.

It depends on what you are deleting, or trying to delete. For text, the Backspace key would delete a single character, to the left of the insertion point. Ctrl+Backspace deletes the preceding word.

    Hello

Do you mean you want to be able to hold it down so it will continue to go back until you release the key?

If so, does this only happen in Word and OneNote, or does it also happen in other apps? What about other keys, for example, can you hold down any letter key and see if it continues typing until you release the key?

In Word and OneNote, Backspace normally deletes one character at a time. If Backspace or other navigation keys stop working as expected, the issue is usually with the keyboard or system, not the apps.

    Use these checks:

    1. Test the keyboard
      • Try typing and using Backspace in another app (for example, Notepad).
      • If the issue appears in multiple apps, connect and test with an external keyboard.
      • If an external keyboard works correctly, the original keyboard likely has a hardware problem.
    2. Clean the keyboard
      • Debris under keys can cause intermittent behavior.
      • Use compressed air to blow under and around the Backspace key.
      • Wipe the keyboard with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
    3. Check for software/driver issues
      • If both the built‑in and an external keyboard show the same problem, it may be a driver or software issue.
      • Restart Windows and test again.
      • Boot into Safe Mode and test Backspace:
        • If Backspace works in Safe Mode, a third‑party app or utility is likely interfering and should be disabled or removed.
    4. If the problem persists
      • If keys sometimes work and sometimes do not, and cleaning plus Safe Mode testing does not help, the keyboard hardware may need repair or replacement.
