In new Outlook for Windows (and Outlook on the web), exact and subset duplicate contacts are handled automatically; there is no separate bulk “delete duplicates” button.
Behavior:
- Exact duplicates (same name, email, phone, etc.) are automatically detected and hidden by the contact cleanup feature.
- If one contact is a subset of another (same person but fewer details), the subset contact is automatically hidden and the more complete contact remains visible.
If visible duplicates still appear and need to be removed manually, deleting a contact in Outlook on the web will remove that contact and all its hidden duplicates from all Outlook apps:
- Open Outlook on the web.
- Go to People/Contacts.
- Delete the visible duplicate contact. This removes the contact and any hidden duplicates across Outlook clients.
For classic Outlook (not new Outlook), large numbers of duplicates can be managed via export/import and choosing whether to add a new contact or update an existing one during the import process, but this does not apply to new Outlook.
