Excel web copy paste issue

When I select part of the data in a cell in Excel online and use ctrl-C to copy the item, the system is copying the whole cell, not just the selected text. When I go to paste the data in another sheet or system like word, it pastes all the data from the cell.

For example, if a cell contains this data "A,B,C,D" and I select just "D" to copy using ctrl-c, when I go to paste it in another cell, it will paste "A,B,C,D". In the past, it would have just pasted "D". This is still working right in the desktop version of Excel, it is just broken online.

I also no longer see Cut/Copy/Paste as an option when I right click the selected data in Excel Online.

How do I fix this issue? It is making things really hard for me as I work in multiple Microsoft accounts and need to work on the online Excel often.

Note: I'm using a Microsoft 365 account. This happens while using Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome as the browser.

    Hi @Engineer,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

What you’re describing sounds more like a limitation / behavior change in Excel for the web rather than a setting in your workbook.

Excel Online does not always handle partial text selection inside a cell the same way the desktop app does, so in some cases it may copy the full cell value instead of only the highlighted portion. Microsoft also mentions that copy/paste behavior in Office for the web can differ from the desktop apps due to browser limitations.

Reference: Copy and paste in Office for the web

A few things you can try:

    • Double-click the cell first (or press F2), then highlight only the text and use Ctrl + C

    • Test in InPrivate/ Incognito mode

    • Disable browser extensions temporarily

    • Sign out and back in

    • Use Open in Desktop App when you need to copy only part of the text inside a cell

If this was working normally before and only changed recently, then it may be a service-side change in Excel for the web rather than something you can fix locally. In that case, the best next step would be to send feedback from Excel for the web or have your Microsoft 365 admin open a support ticket with Microsoft.

For now, the desktop app would be the most reliable workaround for this specific workflow.

    I hope this helps.
